Sushi Bar Gallery is proud to present The Artist In The Maze, a solo show by Matthew Tyler Jones.

Starting in 2010, through writings, drawings and paintings, Matthew Tyler Jones began constructing the narrative of The Maze. The artist describes The Maze as a virtual universe that he and his wife Stephanie inhabit, along with a host and contestants in a multivalent game show environment. For this exhibition at  Sushi Bar Gallery, Matthew will present ten new paintings within an installation that represents the future gravesite for him and his wife within The Maze. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience this fully immersive setting by wearing the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2--a head-mounted display to navigate the artist's virtual game world.

It was expressed as an unencumbered adolescent obsession. “We want to taxidermy our bodies when we die,” Matt said and says.  “When we die we want to be on display in a museum.  Our bodies are art objects, like a mummy would be in a museum.”  He explained that they want to do this forever. There is something earnest, and, unexpectedly, uncomfortable about Matt simply saying: I make art about loving. S. Zelda Roland, 2011.

Matthew Tyler Jones was born in Paducah, Kentucky in 1980, and lives and works in New York. He received his BFA from The University of Kentucky and his MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2011. His previous work includes the film Lil C.C. Wannabe A Ph.D.
